The City of St. Charles is a unique area on the Missouri River with a splendid mix of old and new. With a population of nearly 67,000, we are one of the largest cities in St. Charles County, as well as the oldest. The City serves as the county seat of St. Charles County, Missouri.
 

St. Charles was recognized by NerdWallet, a consumer advocacy and financial literacy website, for its strong performance in home ownership and employment analysis.  In a NerdWallet analysis of the Best Places for Job Seekers in Missouri, St. Charles ranked 13th out of the 52 places considered.  NerdWallet also ranked St. Charles among the top 50  Best Places for Home Ownership in Missouri.  
 

St. Charles County is the wealthiest county in Missouri and one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. The cost of living in St. Charles is 3.5% lower than the U.S. average and the unemployment rate 6.60 %, which is significantly lower the U.S. average.

Famous Past...

French Canadian fur trader Louis Blanchette founded the town, originally known as St. Charles as Les Petites Cotes (The Little Hills) in 1765. The famed pioneer, Daniel Boone, was one of the early settlers in St. Charles County, residing here from 1795 until his death in 1820. The Lewis and Clark Expedition also began in St. Charles in 1804. St. Charles is the home of one of the finest Historic Preservation Districts in the Midwest and was voted “Best Day Tour From St. Louis” due to its unique charm, shops and restaurants located on Main Street.

Today, St. Charles is an attractive suburban community with a diverse economic base represented by a mixture in industrial and commercial enterprises, support services and an established tourist industry. St. Charles is home to national and regional headquarters of numerous manufacturing and technology companies. Lindenwood University also calls St. Charles their home.


Recreation

St. Charles is host to a wide variety of year round activities, many of which take place in its beautiful parks. You’ll be sure to enjoy all of the green spaces including the Katy Trail, a 237 mile hiking/bicycling trail, which begins near St. Charles and follows the path of the Missouri River through Frontier Park, all the way to Clinton, Mo.

The rural edge of St. Charles faces the Missouri River bluffs and is home to some of the finest vineyards and wineries in the Midwest. Ameristar Casino, on the banks of the Missouri River in St. Charles, was recently voted as the Best Casino in the AAA Magazine’s list of Best Places.

SSM St. Joseph Health Center
Nationally recognized SSM St. Joseph Health Center is located St. Charles. SSM St. Joseph Health Center is national recognition for quality and performance and is the only open heart surgery center in St. Charles County. The SSM Neurosciences Institute at St. Joseph Health Center has earned Primary Stroke Center Certification by the Joint Commission, an honor only 14% of the nation’s hospital received. Most recently, AARP recognized SSM as “2013 Best Employer”.

Mercy Medical
Mercy has recently expanded into St. Charles County and has built a new health care clinic St. Charles. They have announced plans to invest $290 Million in St. Charles County. Mercy Hospital St. Louis has been ranked number 2 in Missouri and number 2 in the St. Louis area on the best hospitals list for 2013-14 by U.S. News & World Report. Mercy was recognized in 8 specialties.
